The Real Male and Female “Ewu Iwu” (Edo Dress).
During one of our Ibota sessions on NEBO TV, we discussed the ongoing distortion of the “Ewu Iwu” or “Edo Dress,” a popular attire worn by Edo men. Essentially, the “Ewu Iwu” was created by Dr. Ekhaguosa Aisien as a modern substitute for traditional Benin body markings. This remarkable Benin attire was approved and officially launched by Oba Erediauwa in 1986 at the Oba’s Palace. The symbols on both the male and female versions of the dress are replicas of the original Iwu body markings, which were traditionally incised on the bodies of the Benin people in ancient times.
Shortly after the introduction of the Ewu Iwu, various incorrect designs featuring the symbols of Ada and Eben began to emerge. These distorted designs nearly overshadowed the original styles. As a result, people have started incorporating the Ada and Eben symbols into their dresses, replacing the authentic Ewu Iwu design.

The True Female Version of Ewu Iwu
The female version of the Ewu Iwu is not well-known among Benin women. This lack of awareness may be due to the misconception that this cultural attire is exclusively for Benin men. In this discussion, we will explain the female version of the Ewu Iwu, highlighting the differences between the authentic style and its imitations.
